At this four day Montessori conference in Christchurch, I presented a workshop - Beyond recycling - Creating a sustainable community. This workshop was attended by around 50 conference delegates from New Zealand and Australia. We engage, we empower, but how do we enact? What is Education for Sustainability, what is a sustainable community and how do we embed sustainability into all aspects of our school community? This workshop explored the potential for sustainable practices through examples and experiences, and sharing our journey to creating a sustainable school community. We also looked at current initiatives, such as the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development.

During this workshop attendees were taken back to their own childhood and revisited their childhood memories in the natural world. The focus of the workshop was on how we, as early childhood teachers, can create meaningful early childhood memories in the natural world for the children in our care, with some practical ideas.
